Miami International Orchid Show
The 64th Miami International Orchid Show is just around the corner! Mark your calendars for Feb. 26-28. In addition to gorgeous floor exhibits and vendors from around the world, this year’s show, “Passport to Paradise” will also include displays from many of south Florida’s tropical horticultural groups. Plan now to attend this tropical plant extravaganza, Feb. 26-28 at the DoubleTree Miami Mart and Convention Center in Miami. This is the
same location as the 19th WOC show in 2008. For more information about the show, please contact the South Florida Orchid Society (www.SouthFloridaOrchidSociety.org, or email SFOrchid@bellsouth.net). Of course, R.F. Orchids will have a spectacular display and a well-stocked sales booth at the show.

Recent Awards
A big round of applause is in order! At the January meeting of the West Palm Beach Judging Center, Tom Coffey’s V. Sandra Johnson ‘Sambo‘ received the AOS’s highest award for flower quality, the First Class Certificate (FCC/AOS). This is the third FCC to this amazing hybrid, and blooming size plants of it are still available in our catalog!

We received three awards at the same judging meeting: Rhy. gigantea ‘Crownfox Apricot Glow’ AM/AOS, Rhy. gigantea v. illustris ‘Gabby’s Delight’ HCC/AOS, and V. Rita Bertram ‘Crownfox Hercules’ AM/AOS.

Congratulations!
Deborah Drake is the winner of our “name that hybrid” contest. We drew her name from all the folks who ordered our December special, and she will determine the name of our (so far) un- registered cross of C.lueddemanniana alba × C. Snow Blind ‘Mike’s Snow’ AM/AOS. The first plant has just bloomed, and Deborah will provide us with her choice of a name for this beautiful hybrid.

Cold-Damaged Orchids?
If any of your orchids were damaged by the recent cold spell here in South Florida, they might recover if you take some care with them. Cold damage typically looks like this – white patches on the foliage. Plants may drop such damaged leaves. If the damaged tissue stays dry, it will remain as scars on the leaves. However, this damaged tissue can become infected with fungal or bacterial diseases, so we strongly recommend several applications of fungicide 7-10 days apart to reduce the chances of this. Heavily damaged leaves should probably be removed (use a very sharp, sterilized tool) before you spray. A good fungicide to use is Dithane-M45.

Now Showing
Thanks for all the concern about how the orchids and garden fared last month, when South Florida shivered for days in record-breaking cold. Everything in the greenhouses came through just fine, and while we did have some damage to the most tropical, cold-sensitive plants in the garden, we think everything will recover after some careful trimming and lots of TLC.Come see the garden on one of our weekend tours, 11am and 3pm Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. We have a wonderul collection of rare palms and other tropical trees and plants, as well as many orchids naturalized in the trees.
