Congratulations!

We extended our summer sale at the nursery, and had a second drawing for a $500 orchid collection. The lucky winners were Amy Benjamin and Brian Perry of Miami Beach, shown here with Mike and all their loot. They picked up their collection last month, just in time for Brian’s birthday, and planned to show off  the blooming orchids at the party.

Save the Date!

Mark your calendars for the weekend of October 15-17, because that’s the weekend of the East Everglades Orchid Society’s annual show here in the gardens at R.F. Orchids. This year’s theme, “Cascade of Orchids”, should inspire exhibitors to design even more beautiful displays. The show weekend will include vendors, food, an exhibit by the Homestead Art Club, and lots more, so be sure to come on down. Free parking and free admission, too! EEOS invites all local growers to enter their blooming orchids for AOS judging; plant registration will be Thursday, Oct. 14.
Contact EEOS for more information (www.orchidseeos.com).

Best Wishes for a Sweet New Year!
Rosh Hashanah is Sept. 9. Order your new year’s gift arrangements early so we have time to get them sent out for you!

Intrepid Travelers Return
Last month Bob and Mike escorted a group to Medellin, Colombia, for the orchid show and flower festival. The AOS judges in the group granted 34 awards to entries in the show, the most ever awarded in Medellin. Everyone had a fabulous time, especially at the show’s opening party! Annie Jenkins taught Mike a few new dance steps. We want to thank Monica Sanchez of the Medellin Botanic Garden for all her help with the show (and Mike’s dancing lessons)! The group visited a lot of fascinating areas near the city, including “Little Tequendama” Falls, the Botero museum, many colonial towns and Colomborquideas nursery. (Sign up for
tour information if you want to go next year). Click here for more photos!

Fall Orchid Camp Schedule
Our orchid culture class schedule for the fall has been released. Come join us! Information is available here.

Other Calendar Notes
Mike just returned from New York, where he presented a program on Vanda Culture to the Long Island Orchid Society. He’ll be at the Sept. 2 meeting of the Naples Orchid Society and the Sept. 14 meeting of the Gold Coast Orchid Society. Bob will present a program for the Coalition for Orchid Species (COS) Sept. 20 at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and one for the Highlands County Orchid Society in Sebring on Sept. 27. Plan on a great
program and plenty of goodies for sale and raffle at all of these meetings!

Now Showing
The garden is richly fragrant this month, with the incredible aromas of the Aerides species and Trichoglottis brachiatas (left). The beauty of the flowers is enhanced by their amazing fragrance! And our specimen Brassavola nodosas (below) are in full bloom, too. They’re only fragrant after dark, but what a show!

We’re open six days a week (closed on Mondays) from 9am to 5pm, and we have free garden tours on weekends (weather permitting) at 11am and 3pm. We’d love for you to visit. If you need a map or directions to the nursery, those are here on the site (“contact us”).
